festive for fall!

Tis the season, everyone! And, no, I'm not talking about Christmas (yet!!). If you live up North, you've probably already been experiencing symptoms of fall, but for us Southerners, fall has just begun to show its face in our hometowns. The leaves are becoming crispy and colorful, the winds are becoming brisk and blustery, and I am quickly settling into my favorite season of the year.

Soft and cozy sweaters have been my saving grace as the weather fluctuates between 50 and 80 degrees. This Gap sweater is the perfect weight because it's warm enough to guard against chilly breezes, but it's also light enough that it's not uncomfortably hot in the sunlight. I love accessorizing the neutral cream and navy palette with fun jewelry!

plaid fad?

Hey, everybody! I am so excited to be back today to share the outfit I created around these adorable plaid pants!!! Never in a million years did I think that I would be one to rock such a bold and trendy look... but, right now, I'm loving it! And, yes, in case you're wondering, I am planning on wearing these to school, so we'll see how well they're received by the general public! ;)

One of my biggest tips when styling outfits featuring a certain trend is to have that piece be the focal point of the outfit and then build around that. Otherwise, there tends to be too much going on! Here, the plaid pants are the first thing that stands out! So, to accent their color and cut, I chose a black, 3/4 length sleeve sweater up top and a pair of black, suede pumps. Add an elegant, camel handbag and a dainty gold necklace for extra chic factor, and you're good to go! By adding minimal accessories, you can morph a completely trendy outfit into a more classic and wearable look (that you hopefully won't cringe at in 10 years ;).

Additionally, these pants have dragged me out of my jeans rut (thank goodness!). As the weather gets a bit chillier, I tend to gravitate towards wearing solely jeans as bottoms for a solid four months (aka all of winter!!) because they are basic and will match with anything. However, I am definitely appreciating a deviation from the navy monotony that is my jeans collection. These fresh and festive plaid pants have breathed some life and spirit back into my fall/winter wardrobe!

ownership

Hey, y'all! I'm very sorry that this post is late, but my family and I have been on Fall Break touring the Blue Ridge Parkway through NC and up through VA and various colleges along the way. Pictures are most definitely on their way in a future post! But today, I wanted to respond to a post I read by one of my favorite bloggers, Carly of The College Prepster, that she entitled "Ownership."

In her post, Carly outlined the underlying change that she has worked her whole life to achieve: ownership of her life, character, and actions. She acknowledges that this has not been a quick process and identifies becoming her own boss as one of the largest milestones towards her goal. I was so inspired after reading how she's been able to accomplish such great things being a few years out of college. But seeing as I'm still in high school, I wanted to talk about how one can still gain some ownership over his or her life while still living with parents, friends, teachers, etc. who all want to give you their 50 cents about how you should live your life.

1 // Figure out what you think for yourself, and express it with confidence and respect.
While you're in high school, it's easy to feel smothered by overbearing, excuse me, informative adults who want you to act as they please. While I am certainly not encouraging you to enter a full-on rebellion phase, I do think that it is imperative for us as students to formulate our own stances on our futures (collegiate, career, and familial), today's "hot topics," and the role of government in citizens' daily lives.* Once establishing these opinions, it is important to stand by them in a respectful manner. Nobody likes someone who militantly enforces their views onto others, so keep that in mind!

*These are the three essentials, in my opinion, that every person needs to be well-informed about in order to have some ownership of his or her life!!

2 // Setting your own goals and seeing them through!
High school is formulated in order to encourage students to "stick to the status quo" (anyone catch the High School Musical reference...cheesy I know! ;). Therefore, it can be very easy to get swept into the masses of people doing the bare minimum to just "get by." I encourage all students to strive to excel to the best of his or her ability. Whether that means getting the lead in the school play, participating in a team sport for the first time, or getting a good grade in that tough math class, endeavoring to do your best in high school sets a precedent for your collegiate and professional careers down the road. If you prove yourself to be committed to a cause about which you are passionate, your reputation as a hard worker will open doors for you in the future. Also, the feeling of accomplishing your goals is so satisfying, and it will boost your self-esteem and confidence in your ability to gain ownership of your life.

3 // Being flexible when pursuing goals!!
Now, all of this talk about making elaborate plans and being completely invested in everything you do sounds great in theory, but not all of your plans are going to be executed flawlessly. Especially when they involve other people, plans can tend to get off-schdule, messy, and even scrapped completely. Events that happen along the way may make your reconsider and even redefine the direction in which you want your life to take, and following that, your all-important goal may not be on your radar anymore. It is important to have the vision to see something through from start to finish, but you also must be able to work around obstacles that are placed in your way, get back up when you've been knocked down (because it will happen!!), and have the tenacity and ingenuity to be able to alter your goal if it doesn't work out or is no longer relevant to how you want to life your life.

4 // Giving recognition to the changes you've made!
The path to ownership of your life is guaranteed to bring you stress and frustration because not everything will go your way. So, from time to time, looking back at your own accomplishments validates the perseverance you used to make change and provides you with inspiration to continue to work hard towards your dreams!

"In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility." -Eleanor Roosevelt

. . .

I know that in today's society, there is so much pressure to fit into the mold of a perfect student, son/daughter, role model, etc. I hope that this post reminds you to take ownership of whoever you want to be in life! Tell me in the comments what steps, big or small, that you're going to take in order to gain some ownership over your life. Thanks so much for taking time to read today's blog post, and I hope that each of you has a marvelous day!

transitioning into fall fashion!

Hey, everyone! Though my heart is already well-immersed in fall fashion, my body is unfortunately still living in unpredictable NC weather! So, I've had to come up with a style compromise: the clothes must be comfortable and practical for any of the elements that plan to make an appearance during the day, but I can begin to implement some fall-esque styles into my everyday outfits. YAY!

This outfit took me by surprise and has become one of my new favorites for this coming season. I have never tried out any sort of track pants, but let me tell you, these pants feel even softer than most of my pajamas!! They are so loose and breathable, while still maintaining an appropriate appearance. This short-sleeved, cream sweater was an ideal match with these pants because of its neutral color and bronze jewel accents. Lastly, the bronze loafers finished off the outfit by tying in the bronze from the bejeweled sweater.

my fall fashion wish list!

Hello, everybody! With New York Fashion Week having just wrapped up, fashion has definitely been on the forefront of my brain. Even though NYFW featured many spring styles, it still inspired me to peruse my favorite sites online to see what was out there this season. And, as usual, they didn't disappoint ;)! Here's a list of my absolute favorite standout pieces for this fall!

These fabulous booties are the perfect mix of being chic and comfortable! They can be easily worn during everyday activities, while they also have the ability to be dressed up for a night out on the town! The scalloped edge makes my heart melt a little, and the rich, oak brown is very fall appropriate!!

2 // Cable Knit Fisherman Sweater

Even though I've never owned one, I am constantly riding myself drawn to these beautiful, cream, cable-knit sweaters! They add an unparalleled texture to any outfit, plus their warmth and coziness makes me yearn for them even more! LOVE!!!

I am actually IN LOVE with this high neck (but not turtleneck) sweater from Zara! The light, dove gray shade is so endearing, and the modern cut is appealing to the eye without being too futuristic. I also love the structure provided by the exposed seams because it keeps the sweater from being too oversized, which is very helpful for girls who are petite up top like myself.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how absolutely breathtaking this Scandal clothing line from the Limited is?! I love that instead of just being based loosely around a character's style, this clothing line includes very close replicas of the same pieces Olivia Pope herself rocks on the daily. Each of these pieces is very fitting for the fall and winter seasons. I'm actually dying over the dolman wrap coat and the plaid cape... hey, OP, can you please hook me up??

Baublebar is killing it (as always) with their statement necklaces this season! They feature many different styles of jewelry on their site, which I actually love because I find myself drawn to pieces that I may or may not have looked into previously based on how they style them. I also love the Guest Bartender section of their website! While not everything is my cup of tea, I still love to see the Bartender's story and how their personality is reflected through the items they showcase. Above, I've featured my first ever BaubleBar necklace (via my Instagram picture), which I am so in love with!

. . .

And, that's a wrap, folks! Let me know in the comments section what fall fashion trends/items are on your must-have list for this season! I am loving hearing feedback from more and more of you, so please leave a quick message down below! Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my latest blog post, and I hope each and every one of you has a fabulous day!
